Road trips
Road trip activities that don't need a screen or a tray table
Car seats have no flat surface and plenty of bumps. Here are screen-free road trip activities for ages 3–8 that work anyway.

A car is a harder room than an airplane. There is no table, the surface moves, the light changes every few seconds, and anything dropped in a car seat is effectively gone until the next fuel stop.
The activities that work in a car are the ones a child can hold, that stay put, and that do not depend on reading small print while the road bends.
Play that needs nothing at all
Start with these. They cost nothing, they require no clean-up, and they leave your physical activities fresh for later.
- Color of the mile: pick a color, count how many cars you see in it before the next exit.
- Story tag: you say one sentence, they say the next, and it gets sillier every turn.
- Alphabet hunt on road signs, working forwards then backwards.
- Twenty questions, limited to things you can see out of the window.
- Would-you-rather, with two silly options — surprisingly durable at ages five and up.
Play that sits on a lap
- A firm board or tray they can hold, so there is a stable surface that does not slide.
- Dry erase drawing, which survives bumps better than anything needing precision.
- Magnetic pieces, because magnets stay where they are put even when the car turns.
- Seek-and-find scenes, which need no fine motor control at all.
- Audio-guided activities, which work perfectly when looking down starts to feel bad.
Plan around motion sickness
Children who get carsick usually manage better with activities that keep their eyes up or use their ears rather than close focus on a page. Audio-guided play, spotting games and story-building are all safe bets on winding roads.
Save the detailed drawing and seek-and-find for straight highway stretches, and switch back when the road starts turning.
Use the stops
Every stop is a chance to reset. Two minutes of running around buys far more quiet than another new activity does, and it makes the next stretch of the drive easier for everyone.
Where Beansie fits
Beansie is a firm, lap-sized board with reusable activity sheets, dry erase drawing, magnetic characters, games and QR-guided audio activities. Magnets stay in place over bumps, the board gives a stable surface without a table, and the guided audio gives you something to switch to when looking down stops being comfortable.
Lead with the free games, keep one physical activity in reserve for the long middle stretch, and let the rest stops do some of the work.
